Perception Repositioning for a Frontier Technology Giant Forty Years Ahead of Its Reputation

The Challenge
S01
TDK was founded in 1935, employs over 100,000 people across 30 countries, and sits underneath most of the technology people touch every day. Public perception was stuck roughly forty years behind it.
The company’s own framing became the strategic foundation: TDK communicates 30 out of 100 of its actual capability. When a frontier technology business is read as a legacy components manufacturer, what does it lose - and to whom?
The Approach
S02
I led the day-to-day creative on the account, working from nine synthesised stakeholder interviews across the GM of Corporate Communications, the CEO, the CTO and the CHRO.
The thesis that organised everything:
“AI is not only a brain. It is a body.”
That repositioned TDK as the physical infrastructure the AI era actually runs on - true, unclaimed, and considerably larger than components.
I wrote the master Playbook copy, a deck running to around 170. Built the Flagship Moment section from scratch, including three complete concepts.
Then the Mini Implementation Guide. That was the piece that made the framework usable by communicators in thirty countries rather than admired by head office.
Mid-programme we restructured the architecture entirely, from a quarterly social-problem model to a durable industry-based one, and realigned both decks around it.
The Insight
S03
External identity updates far more slowly than a company does. TDK had already become a frontier business; the world’s picture of it hadn’t moved in decades. Closing a gap that wide takes a thesis big enough to reframe the category, and then a system that lets a hundred thousand people tell the same story without being handed a script.
