How might I help a founder-led firm name the thing it already was - in a category where every competitor claims the same four virtues?

THE IDENTITY

QUESTION

How might I help a founder-led firm name the thing it already was - in a category where every competitor claims the same four virtues?

The Challenge
S01

This US Accountancy Firm had something genuinely unusual. Thirty people, fully virtual, founder-led, and actually relationship-driven rather than relationship-branded. But in a market split between PE-backed consolidators and transactional local firms, that difference had no words attached to it.

Everyone in accountancy says they care. When the whole category makes the same claim, how does the firm that means it prove it?

The Approach
S02

I started with the map rather than the message. Plotted against Aprio, Citrin Cooperman, Marcum, Grant Thornton and Moss Adams on two axes - transactional to relationship-led, founder-led to PE-backed - one quadrant came out effectively empty. Founder-led and genuinely relationship-driven. Nobody was standing there.

From that, a full brand platform: the positioning line, a manifesto, a two-layer messaging framework for entry and depth, and three platform pillars. Delivered as a 23-slide deck.

The line was “Accounting for Everything” - and the thinking underneath it was that the accounting is the canvas, and everything else is the work.

Then the founder communications programme. A ghostwriting brief structured as a complete system: bio, tone of voice, content pillars, voice guidelines. Two content streams with deliberately different logic, so the founder’s personal posts and the company page could cover the same real-world moments without repeating each other.

The Insight
S03

The strongest positioning is usually already true and simply unnamed. You are not inventing a difference - you are finding the part of the category map nobody occupies, and giving your client permission to stand in it.

THE

OUTCOMES

Deliverables and External Results
  • Full brand platform: positioning line, manifesto, two-layer messaging framework, three pillars

  • Competitive positioning map across six named national and regional competitors

  • 23-slide positioning and messaging deck

  • Interactive website concept, built as a working prototype and demoed live

  • Comprehensive founder ghostwriting brief, structured as a reusable system

  • Two content streams with distinct editorial logic - founder and company page

  • Two ongoing editorial properties: a monthly long-form brief and a quarterly interview series

  • Positioning line signed off without hesitation; the founder used it unprompted on a client call

Internal Shifts Behind the Scenes
  • Stopped defending a difference he couldn’t articulate

  • Gained language for something the firm had been doing instinctively for years

  • Found a filter for content decisions that removed weekly guesswork

  • Could separate his own voice from the company’s without either going quiet
